I
n order to discover the real beauty of Koh Chang, there is no better place to visit than ?Salakphet?, in the far south-east of the island. This community is the largest in Koh Chang Tai (The southern part of Koh Chang). In Salakphet you will find a vibrant village and major pier which serves as a gateway to the seas south of Koh Chang?
and the 52 islands of Trat province. In this area of the island you will see they tyope of scenery not found elsewhere. In order to conserve the natural surroundings a villager?s club was established to maintain the natural surroundings and introduce and integrate eco-tourism into the area in order to benefit both locals and tourists. (More information about this is available from the Home Stay Group that is run by local people or the Salakphet Trekking organisation run by the National Park.)
The locals have put together several activities and programs for travelers who are interested in seeing the Koh Chang that lies beyond the west coast beaches and who wish to contribute to the local community in this area. The most popular activity in Salakphet is the hiking and trekking because you can directly experience the beauty of the nature as well as get to do something that the majority of visitors to the island cannot. Treks to the top of nearby hills can take from 3-4 hours or can involve overnight stays on the summit in order to experience the sunrise over Salakphet Bay. Truly a marvelous experience.

The best example of a local person using his skills and experience to introduce visitors to the delights of Salakphet is Mr. Chuvit, the president of the Salakphet Tourist Committee, which has over 100 members from the community. He grew up in the area and has led countless treks into the mountains. The treks can be challenging, involving clambering up inclines as steep at 50 degrees in The Natural Beauty of Salakphet places and navigating around and under old trees and rocks.

Mr Choovit is also an experience sea kayaker and can provide guided kayak trips around the mangrove swamps in Salakphet Bay in addition to longer paddles to hidden beaches and remote islands. Chuvit is a veteran of kayak contests around Koh Chang and in 2006 won the Her Majesty Queen Sirikit Queen?s Cup for Kayaking which was open for both Thai and Foreign kayakers. He has also undertaken training courses in lifesaving and sea rescue techniques by the Thai Navy Seals. So you can be sure that you are in qualified, experienced hands if you take an adventure tour with him. The latest program for visitors involves kayaking to the remote Wai Chek beach on the south coast of Koh Chang. This is only accessible by sea and visitors will be able to camp there at night. In the near future more kayak programs designed to open up the rarely visited islands south of Salakphet to visitors will begin. These include the islands of Koh Mai See Yai and Koh Klum.
And for anyone interested in exploring Salakphet Bay by kayak on their own, you can hire sea kayaks and equipment including waterproof
bags, life-vest and maps highlighting the places of interest in Salakphet village.
